Patient Journey ยท Phase 3

After each cycle: recovery at home.

The days right after a Lutetium therapy infusion are the most active radiation-safety period. They're also when mild side effects, if any, are most noticeable. The good news: most patients return to normal life within 7โ€“10 days, often sooner.

The week after each cycle

Day 0โ€“1 (discharge day and the next)

You feel reasonable. Mild fatigue, possibly nausea (more common with Lu-177 DOTATATE therapy due to the amino acid infusion). Drink plenty of water. Urinate often โ€” and follow your center's urine guidance (flush twice, wash hands well).

Day 2โ€“3

Radiation level still elevated. Continue distance precautions (1 meter from young children and pregnant women). Sleep separately if possible. Use separate toilet if available. Full radiation safety guide โ†’

Day 4โ€“7

Radiation precautions ease. Most patients return to work, exercise, social life. Some mild fatigue persists. Dry mouth (Lu-177 PSMA therapy) may linger.

Week 2โ€“4

Blood counts may dip during this window โ€” your bone marrow is most affected at this time. Most people don't notice; some feel mild fatigue or get easily winded.

Week 5โ€“6 (or 7โ€“8)

Pre-cycle blood tests, possible scan, then next cycle.

Managing common side effects at home

Mild nausea

  • Anti-nausea medication as prescribed
  • Small frequent meals, bland foods
  • Ginger tea, peppermint
  • Avoid strong smells, fried/spicy foods initially

Fatigue

  • Plan rest periods; don't push through the first 3โ€“4 days
  • Light walks improve energy faster than total rest
  • Hydration and balanced nutrition support recovery
  • Sleep priority โ€” aim for 8 hours

Dry mouth (Lu-177 PSMA therapy)

  • Sugar-free gum or candies
  • Frequent small sips of water
  • Humidifier at night
  • Pharmacy saliva substitutes if persistent
  • Good dental hygiene is critical (dry mouth increases cavity risk)

Mild diarrhea or constipation

  • Stay hydrated
  • Fiber adjustments based on direction
  • OTC medications usually fine (confirm with team)

Frequently asked questions

When can I resume sexual activity?

Most teams recommend waiting about 7 days after a cycle. Use barrier protection during the first week. Discuss with your medical team for specific guidance.

Can I drink alcohol between cycles?

Light moderate alcohol is generally allowed once you've recovered (after day 7). Discuss with your team. Avoid in the first few days when nausea and fatigue are most likely.

Can I exercise?

Yes โ€” gentle exercise helps recovery. Start light walking from day 2โ€“3, work up to your normal routine within a week. Avoid intense exercise in the first 3 days post-cycle.

Will I feel worse after each cycle?

Most patients don't see cumulative worsening. Some feel cycles get a bit easier as they know what to expect. A small number have cumulative fatigue or blood-count issues that require dose adjustment.
